As with many jobs, there is specific training and skills that you will need before entering this field. Before looking for a job as a security guard, it helps to understand the steps you need to take to become a security guard by completing a security executive training or courses.

Basic needs

Each country has different security work requirements, but you usually need to be at least 18 years old. Many places also prefer a high school diploma, but it may not be required. 

Education and training

While a high school diploma is usually the only educational requirement for security jobs, having additional education and training helps. A degree or certification in a related field such as criminal justice or gaming security will usually help you earn a higher salary and move up the chain to executive level. 

Many locations offer combat physical training, defensive and weapon maneuvers, and crisis management to prepare you for intruders or other scenarios.

License and certification

Safety training certificates are an advantage for safety jobs. You may need a state license. Each country has its own requirements. It requires those who work for security agencies to be licensed. However, some security jobs may not require a license as they may fall under an exemption. 

A license helps you stand out from the competition and makes finding work easier. You may be able to find work before your license is granted, as long as you have completed work to obtain a license within 90 days of termination.
