Mary Alford – President
Mary Alford is a professional engineer and the Principal of The Sustainable Design Group, an architectural and engineering firm that specializes in reduced carbon footprint design of towns, neighborhoods, homes and mixed use buildings through infill, innovation, and the creative use of space and place.
Mary is a sixth generation Floridian who was inspired to pursue a degree in Environmental Engineering later in life as she watched the degradation of ecosystems, the poisoning of springs, rivers and beaches, and the urban sprawl that began spiraling out of control. She has worked in those industries with the highest carbon footprints to help them improve – including water and wastewater treatment and the power generation industry. She currently serves as President of the US Green Building Council’s Heart of Florida Chapter. She sees Barrels of Hope and similar disaster relief programs as integral to a humane and sustainable response to global climate change events.
